Digital Grassroots Project

In the fall of 2000, the 10th grade English and social studies departments of Keystone Jr.-Sr. High School in Knox, PA, in collaboration with the technology department and library, applied for a Digital Grassroots grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.   All departments strongly embraced the idea of working in a cross-curricular environment that would combine content with technology.  This website is the result of that collaboration.

Keystone- -Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow is the result of a combined effort of the faculty of the Keystone School District directing and facilitating the sophomore class during the 2001-2002 school year.  The teachers wrote a grant that brought in $19,000 of federal technology funding that is to be used to create a web site that digitizes the history of the school's surrounding community.  In addition to creating history pages, the mission is to positively promote the community as it currently exists and to study ways in which to build a better community for tomorrow.  As a result of receiving the grant money, the school was able to purchase a new web server, 6 laptop computers, scanners, digital cameras and books for the library.  Money for teacher training was also made available.

The sophomore class was responsible for researching, writing, photographing and digitizing the information on the site.  Over the course of the 2001-2002 school year, the class collected the information and organized and prepared it for publication.  Students also received training in the use of Microsoft Front Page.   Front Page is a software program designed to create websites.

This is an ongoing project and we would appreciate input from the community about the website.  If you have any suggestions or recommendations, please feel free to contact the school by phone or email.  Please direct all suggestions to Mr. Sintobin, 10th grade American History teacher, or Ms. Rutkowski, 10th grade English teacher.
