Amish Families In and Around Knox

(All of these pictures were taken on January 9, 2000. Click on pictures to enlarge.)

The Shettler’s, who were one of the first Amish families in Clarion County, first owned this house until about 15 years ago when they moved. The Mast family now owns this house, barn, and all property located in Stobleton, PA.

This barn belongs to the Mast family and is located right beside their house. It has a tall silo situated next to it that holds corn shocks to feed the cattle. They sell jellies that they produce themselves and they also sell vegetables, chickens, and honey that are imported from other Amish families in New England.

This photo was also taken at the Mast farm. These are two Amish horse-and-buggies used for transportation. Two of the horses that live on this farm are named Ned and Johnny. The light brown building located in the back of the picture is an icehouse. To fill the icehouse, they take ice from Lake Lucy and cover it in sawdust to keep it frozen all year long. The gray building directly behind the horses is a wagon shed. To the right of the horses are a red building used as a chicken coop, and a garden used to grow vegetables.

This is the Mast sawmill that was started about 3 years ago by Dan Mast and his son. The electrical wire located in the picture is for electricity to be run into the sawmill, although electricity does not run into Amish houses. Generators are also used to provide power for Amish men to operate mechanical tools in the mill. The windmill located in the center of the picture is used to pump water for the animals that they raise and own.

This is a picture of a new house built by Dan Mast’s son. The siding for the house, called larch siding, was made at an Amish sawmill. The house has navy blue curtains that are shut when the family is not at home, or tied over to one side when they are. The house has an addition on the side that is most likely used as a summer kitchen.

This is a picture of a barn located beside the new house. It has a tall white silo and a corncrib located in front of it. Beside the corncrib is a generator that is powered by diesel fuel and is used to operate pieces of equipment such as the band saw at the sawmill.

This is a photograph of a home owned by a young married Amish couple. There is a white outhouse in the back, which was built 10-15 years ago.

This is a picture of a small sawmill located at the newly built Mast home. The saw is a band saw, which is run by the generator in the previous photograph. The slabs of wood adjacent to the saw are used in iron cooking and iron heating stoves.

This is another picture of an Amish farm stationed in Strobleton, PA. The Amish often have dogs as pets as you can see by the German Shepard standing on the porch. The Amish usually alternate homes to hold their church services.

These are photos of the Amish schoolhouse also located in Strobleton, PA. Amish children attend school through the eighth grade. On top of the schoolhouse is a bell that is rung when school is ready to begin. The Amish like to do things in groups and this is shown by the fact that a group of 10-15 men repainted this schoolhouse together. They also like to assist each other while farming.
