with Fred McIlhatten,
State Representative

I had the opportunity to interview State Representative FredFred McIlhattan (Republican)
McIlhatten.  As a result of my interview I learned that this area has had a very successful past, economically.  In the past years, certain industries, such as the coal and glass industries, have thrived.  Not only has this area been successful in the past but in the present as well.  Mr. McIlhatten felt that this area’s economy is “basically holding its own.” He also felt that this area has plenty to offer, economically.  This areas unemployment figures are no worse than any other area’s, and the area taxes fair well with other local areas.  The Clarion University serves as the base of our economy because of the students that it attracts, among other reasons.  Also, the glass industry has begun to prosper again over the past few years.  Owens Illinois (local Glass Company) seems to be becoming very stable.  In addition to the Glass Industry, the Manufacturing Housing industry is continuing to grow and prosper.  Mr. McIlhatten felt that, right now, it is the most vital industry in our economy.

There are also plans being worked out that would offer a Tech Center that would allow more graduates to stay in the area.  This area also has much more to offer such as, good schools, fair taxes, and good affordable housing.  There is access to the interstate system, with the four exits in the area it allows for good transportation.  On top of the Tech Center there are other programs in the making to diversify this areas economy.  There is a twenty million-dollar expansion loan that will allow for a water system to be run from Clarion to local communities.  In addition to the new water system there is a new prison being built to the north that will supply many jobs to the local area.  The Clarion County Career Center is continuing to upgrade itself technologically.

Mr. McIlhatten went on to say that, on top of the economic stability, this area is a very good place to raise a family.  The local schools are very good, along with the churches, and in comparison to other areas the taxes are relatively fair. Mr. McIlhatten felt that this area is definitely moving in the right direction.  He feels with the stability already present and the plans that are in progress this area should continue to grow and prosper.  He closed the interview by saying that, “I think we have an island of paradise if we package and sell it in the right ways.”
