Knox Volunteer Fire Company

The Knox fire company is an extremely important asset in a community that has been devastated by fire several times in its early history.  Fire fighting has increased a lot in the past few years; because of this, thecompany has had to add on to the fire station, get more equipment, and acquire more fire trucks.

When fire trucks are retired, they usually are retired to a museum. This is an old truck that is pretty much retired except for a few brush fires. It was built in 1962. They wouldn’t take it to building fires because it doesn’t have a ladder or a big tank to hold water.

The equipment they use is a very big part of fighting fires. All the clothes they have to wear are heat and flame resistant. Those pictured would be their bunker boots, coat, pants, helmet, Max hood (this protects their ears, head, and neck), and gloves.

Fire fighters use air packs to go into burning buildings. They are tanks that fit on the fire fighters backs with a face mask that goes over their mouths so they can breath when they are in the burning building. These are the bigger tanks of air that they take with them to the scene so if the fire fighters run out of air in the small tanks, they can refill them and can go back in to the fire.

The new fire engines are nice to have because they have the most updated technology; for example, in this truck the water can be turned on in the cab. The seats in the truck have air tanks hooked into the back of them so the fire fighters can hook them on when they are on their way to the scene to make it faster for them to start fighting the fire. They have larger ladders hooked to the side of the truck for easier access.

This is also an older truck. This truck isn’t used for fighting fires. It provides water for the fire fighters if they don’t have access to fire hydrants.
