I interviewed Mr. John
Summerville a Chemistry teacher at
Keystone
High School
. Mr. Summerville lives right in town. He has been a member of the Knox Lions
Club since June 22, 1981. Leo Bender, Neil Brindley, and Ben Whitehill
established the Knox Lions Club in 1953.
The Lions Club is a nationwide organization that
helps out cities, town, and most public roads. The Knox Lions Club serves our
community in many ways. The Lions Club serves not only our community but also
the whole United States. To support our local community they have Fund Raisers
such as; The Rose Sale, Boy Scout Hoagie Sale, Mystery Dinner Theater, Gumball
Sales, Chicken Bar-B-Q, Broom Sales, Grill Raffles, and Sight Fund Drive. These
Fund Raisers benefit people within the Keystone School District. Another thing
they do is a poster contest, started before 1996, which let the fourth grade
students at Keystone Elementary School make Drug Awareness Posters to place
around the town.
Not
only do they have Fund Raisers, but they do community clean up. They usually take
time to clean up our local parks, and raise money to put forth to fix them up.
They also do clean up along Highway 208.
In
the past 4-5 years Knox has become a little cleaner. The Knox Lions has
sponsored a litter-free community. In doing so they purchased trashcans to put
downtown. Since then we have had a lot less litter problems.
Anyone
who expresses any interests in becoming a member should tell an existing member.
That member should tell the president of the club. Later they will consider
adding you. After your approval they will send you information telling you all
about what activities they do, who they do them, and when they do them.
As
in any future plans they plan to keep the previous and present up and running.
They might have some ideas pop-up. so they might just be adding new things to
their long list.
