FOUR GENERATIONS: Four generation of one family are members of the Clarion County DAR Chapter.
|
|
The Clarion County Chapter renewed old landmarks on
the once famous Susquehanna- Waterford Turnpike, the Lakes–to-Sea
Highway. Six milestones that traced the route of the old road were placed
on two of them. One of the milestones is in front of the Clarion County
Courthouse. Another is in Ashland Township near Elmo, and there is one on
the “Bull Barn Turn” on the Strattanville end of Clarion.
The DAR dedicated the courthouse milestone at the Clarion County
centennial September 1940. Present wee members, Velma Kaster Fitzgerald,
Mrs. George Duffield, and Mrs. Harry Rimer, DAR Regent. |

The Clarion County Chapter of DAR currently has 81
members. The name of the chapter is traced back to 1817 when surveyors
Daniel Standard and David Lawson camped by the river. They heard the clear
sounds of the ripples in distant clarion, of trumpet. They decided to name
it the Clarion River. In 1839 the newly formed county was named for the
river.
The Clarion County chapter is part of the Northwestern District,
which is made up of seventeen chapters. Mrs. William Daugherty of Clarion
has been a member since 1965. She has traced her ancestors back to two
Revolutionary War soldiers, Christian Wenner, and William Frampton. She is
also working on two other connections. In 1973 she served as served as
regent or president of the Clarion County chapter.
In 1967 she
was State Chairman of Junior Membership , which is members between the
ages of 18 and 35. Clarion County currently has four junior members.
Now she is a state officer and Northwest District Director. There
have been five generations of her family in DAR. Most recently her
granddaughter, Amy Kriebel has joined.
The Clarion County chapter visits all seven county school districts
and chooses a senior “good citizen.” The winners are judged
nationally. Clarion County has had a first place winner, a second place
winner and several honorable mentions. They give money to support the
national causes of DAR. They have place historical markers in the county
and have marked revolutionary patriot graves. They also offered genealogy
workshops to people interested in researching their roots. |
