Mr. Irwin, Mr. Sundling, Mrs. Winters, and Mr. Carrow are the most recent recipients of a Keystone Education Foundation grant. They will purchase computers and video equipment to use for classroom projects and for producing the annual senior videos. Faith and Nick received this year's 8th grade American Legion awards. Congratulations to Sam, the May CHAMPS athlete of the month. She is pictured with our trainer, Jeremiah, representing CHAMPS. Sam also set school records in track for the 200 and 400! It was a tight race, but the pierogi with the green hat and purse (aka Mr. Maddy) came in dead last at a Pirates game. Congratulations Alyssa and Dan, our 2008 Prom Queen and King. Congrats to Mr. Vaughn, this year's KHS Keystones Technology Integrator. Mr. Vaughn was also selected from over 600 nominations statewide to attend the 2008 Keystones: Technology Integrators Summit this summer at Bucknell University!

KHS students and teachers traveled to Harrisburg in March for the House and Senate Appropriations Committee hearings to voice concern over our mere 1.5% increase in basic education funding. Madison participated with two KES students in the annual Dance Master's of PA competition. Madison's groups earned a 1st place rating and choreography award for "Mary Poppins" and a 2nd for "Meet the Flintstones." Both rankings qualify the girls for nationals at Disney World in July. Congratulations, Madison!

Congratulations to our District 9 basketball honorees:  Samantha (2nd team), Cassy (3rd team), and Kyle (3rd team.) KHS students who participated in PMEA Region 3 Bandfest in April included: Ryan, Braden, Nicole, Kyle, Josh, Ben, Sean, Jake, Erin, and Ashley.

KSD School Board members Bill Shaner and Tom McCoy joined District Justice Amy Long, State Representative Fred McIlhattan, and other community members and parents at our CFF "Flip the Switch" night. Participants learned how KHS teachers and students are using our new technologies as teaching and learning tools. More pictures!

The 2008 National Honor Society inductees include: (front) Becca, Kerri, Chelsea, Lauren, Brittany, Jenna, (middle) Anna, Kristen, Ashleigh, Holly, Ashley, (back) Patrick, Logan, Matt, Seth, Dan, and Brett. Congratulations!
John took 1st at 120 lbs. and Tanner, 2nd at 125 lbs. at the MAWA Western PA District Qualifiers. Both advanced to the next round, which will be held at Shippensburg University. Congratulations and good luck!

Ben and Joe (left) recently organized a Mat Ball Tournament  (modified kickball) to benefit T. J. Wilson.  Wilson is the son of Keystone graduate Randy Wilson.  T. J is a two-year-old heart transplant recipient who was recently featured on "Good Morning America" because of the experimental Berlin Heart he received.  The winning Mat Ball team included:  (top row)  Jared, Lexan, Samantha, Dani, Britt, Tyler, Zack, and  (front)  Brandon and Garrett. The Varsity cheerleaders took 3rd place in Large Varsity and Jr. High took 2nd in the Jr. high division of the Oil City Competition. Brittany and Emily won Jr. doubles, Aimee won jr. jump off, Emma won Jr. individuals & 2nd in tumble off, Fly High took 2nd in Jr. Stunt group. The Cyclones took 2nd in Sr. stunt group, Corey took 3rd in tumble off and 2nd in St. Individuals. Corey and Lauren won Sr. doubles and Lauren also won Sr. Individuals and 
jump off and took 2nd in Sr. tumble off.
Congratulations to Garrett (3rd), Marcus (2nd), and Mike (3rd) for their strong performances at the D9 wrestling tournament.

KHS students who participated in District Chorus this year included Shane, Dan, Chris, Ashley, JoBeth, Anna, and Kristan.  Tyler and Ally represented KHS at PMEA Region II Band.
Courtney and Tuesdae represented KHS  at the District Jazz Festival. Shiliah won 3rd place for her original art and Holly got 2nd for a poem she wrote around the theme, "Wolves and Moose of the Isle Royale." Their entries correlated with Mr. Baker's Biology unit on "Populations." See their winning entries. Congratulations!

The Keystone Varsity Cheerleaders won first place at the Elk County Catholic Cheerleading Competition on Saturday, January 26 in St. Mary's. There were 5 teams in their division. The Powerhouse Panthers took 3rd place in senior stunt group and the Jr. High cheerleaders took 3rd in their division.

Congratulations to our cheerleaders for their impressive showing at the Karns City competition! The jr. high took 2nd in their division, and Emily won the jr. high tumble-off.  The varsity took 3rd in their division, the Powerhouse Panther stunt group (Lauren, Chelsea M., Corey, Haley, and Chelsea S.) took 2nd in stunt group, Corey took 2nd in varsity tumble-off, and Lauren won the varsity individual, jump off and tumble-of Good luck at ECC!  More pictures

Dr. Gool presented Mr. Baker, Mrs. Heller, and Mrs. Keck with $1,000 grants from the KSD Education Foundation. The money will be used for classroom projects that integrate technology. Maddie and Becca made a good team as they built their gingerbread house in Mrs. Kinch's Family and Consumer Sciences class.

Airman 1st Class Amy Barnett, a 2005 KHS graduate, presented Mr. Maddy with a flag that flew over Iraq in memory of Ross McGinnis. Amy was the guest speaker at our Veteran's Day assembly. Almost every computer in the building was put to use as the second round of the online 4Sight test was administered. This test predicts success on the PSSA tests and helps teachers plan instruction. Destany Hotard (center) arrived with her family via Primetime Limousine to take part in our Veteran's Day assembly. Destany, a 9th grader from Jacksonville, FL, performed a song in honor of our fallen hero, PFC Ross McGinnis. Read more.

Kelly, Matt, Brian, (pictured) Courtney H., and Anna D. represented Keystone at the Mock UN held at A-C Valley.  Students represented foreign nations and debated issues of free expression and democracy with delegates from several local schools. Mr. Warner accompanied the group. Kristen was KHS's high scorer at the CUP Math Competition on Nov. 1. Pictured demonstrating their favorite math symbols are Dan, Lucas, Brett, Ben, Andrea, Kristen, and (back) Mareah, Alicia, and Kelly. Mr. Kifer is the Math Team advisor.

Clarion County Career Center "Students of the Quarter" for the first grading period include Katie (Allied Health Science), Tamara (Industrial Technology), Brittany (Cosmetology), Megan (Tourism & Marketing), Ben (Police Science), and Markus (Construction Technology).
Congratulations to Chris, the Knox Lions Club Student of the Month for October. He is pictured with Amy Long of the Lions. The Keystone Education Foundation is pleased to accept a check for $10,000 from the Clarion County Community Bank.  Pictured from left to right are CCCB CFO, James Kifer, who presented the check; KSD Superintendent, Dr. Jean Atkin Gool; and Keystone Education Foundation President, John Mason. Donations such as this are used to fund teacher grants for technology .

Dr. Cornish, Redbank Valley SD Superintendent, presented Mrs. Walters and the Keystone SD with plaques commemorating Mrs. Walters' completion of the GROW Leadership program. Dr. Cornish served as Mrs. Walters' mentor for the GROW program. Also pictured are Dr. Gool and Mr. Slagle, president of the KSD Board of Education. Junior class officers include Anna, president; Kerri, secretary; Kelly, treasurer; and Mareah, vice president. Mrs. Goble tearfully announced her retirement in October after 35 years. In her remarks, Mrs. Goble challenged her students to be open to change. On that note, she will serve as our substitute librarian! She is pictured with Mr. Heath and Mr. Wit, with whom she taught the Civil War classes.
