Course Description
Health 9

 
- (alternate days, full year, .5 credit) 

This course is required in the 9th grade and describes the systems of the body and their functions.  Common problems and diseases are identified with the emphasis on prevention.  Drug, alcohol, and tobacco use is looked at from the point of responsibility and risk.  Human sexuality includes special emphasis on AIDS education and the benefits of abstinence.

Your evaluation in this class will be based on the following:

A.  Exams - There will be at least one exam for every chapter.

B.  Quizzes - There will be several quizzes given in preparation for the chapter exams. The quizzes may be unannounced.           

C.  Homework - There will be homework assigned on a regular basis.  All homework assignments must be done in complete sentences.

D.  Notebooks - Your notebook should be neat and complete; if you miss a class, be sure to get the notes given during your absence.  The notebooks will be checked periodically.

E.  Class participation - Pay attention and get involved.


II. Grading Scale: arrow
-Your grade be evaluated by computing the total points you earned during the marking period and dividing your points by the total possible points available during the quarter. This will produce a percentage which will be applied to the following grading scale:

100% - 93% = A
92% - 85% = B
84% - 77% = C  
76% - 70% = D        
69% -  0% = F

First Marking Period:
Chapter 1 - Making Healthy Choices.

Chapter 12 - Food and Nutrition.

Chapter 14 - Digestion and Excretion.

Chapter 15 - Movement and Coordination. (Three exams)


Second Marking Period:
 
Chapter 16 - Cardiovascular and Respiratory Health. (Two Exams)

Chapter 18 - Personal Care.


Third Marking Period: 
Chapter 8 - Reproduction and Heredity.

Chapter 9 - Pregnancy and Birth.

Chapter 23 - AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Chapter 6 - Building Healthy Relationships.


Final Marking Period: 
Chapter 19 - Alcohol.

Chapter 20 - Tobacco.

Chapter 21 - Preventing Drug Abuse.


FINAL EXAM: There will be a comprehensive final exam.
*** Your final grade will be determined by adding the percentages of the four marking periods plus your percentage on the final exam and then dividing that number by 5, which will give you your final overall percentage.

Cheating will result in an automatic F for the marking period.
