Begin the journey! Gathering Information

To begin your note taking ---  Write the name and url of the web site you are reading and then put your notes below. (Remember you can gain information by analyzing pictures.)

  1. Choose a time frame and area of exploration from the Journey Log by clicking on a number from 1 to 13 to look at the trail and major discoveries along the way. Throughout your planning keep a simple written log of times, places, ideas, and choices to help you plan later.
  2. Click on the picture choices to learn more about the animals, plants, and Native Americans.  Take notes about your choices. Review your assigned TASK, if need be.
  3. Check for further chronological information on A Timeline of the Trip. Add any new ideas to your log.
  4. Click on the Interactiave Map on the spot along the route you have chosen for your research. Read the journal entries that are in your time frame. Read about the Native Americans that lived there. Write simple notes in your log. Be sure to have a direct quote or two giving credit to the writer. For a look at Clark's original maps see: Maps
  5. Choose one article from the Kid's Pages: Great Falls Tribune that supports your research. Take notes for your log.
  6. A last comprehensive site is Discovering Lewis & ClarkŪ. Due to the vast amount of information, before you go to this site you, should know exactly what you are looking for. Use the menu at the left to help you through the site. Note that plants and animals are found under "Natural History." This site has some great pictures, too.

Which Way Now?: The Storyboard

Before making your PowerPoint you must take time to review, analyze and synthesize your notes. What information will you use, and how will it be arranged on the slides? Choose important events and interesting discoveries.
  1. On paper draw a simple storyboard page for each slide that shows your layout for the electronic scrapbook. Use the storyboard as a design plan for your PowerPoint.
  2. Click on the link to find a template and print off for your use.   Storyboard

Onward & Westward: The Scrapbook

Now it is time for you to put your electronic scrapbook together using PowerPoint.
  1. Choose a simple theme that is appropriate for your topic. Find a font that looks like cursive, but is not too difficult to read. Remember your audience should be able to read the text from their seats.
  2. Use blank slides and write your text in an inserted text box. Insert pictures and move to wherever you want them.
  3. Look at the original journals. Note how there are no titles and the text often wraps around the pictures. You may achieve this wrapping effect by placing your picture and then putting your textbox on top of your picture. Type above, to the sides of, and below the picture. When you click off the text box, the picture should come to the front.
  4. Each slide should contain at least one picture, one short quote, and some imaginative writing, as if you were observing and describing the item or situation. Your page should be dated.
  5. Be ready to share your "experiences" with your class.
  6. Reminder: the last slide has your citations.
