Library Procedures

Library Grading System
All students in grades K-6 will receive a grade every nine weeks for library class.
O = Outstanding skill level and no more than 3 expectation violations
S (+,-) = Average skill level and no more than 6 expectation violations
U = Over 6 violations

Rules/Expectations
Keystone Elementary School students are expected to abide by the following rules in all areas of the school.

Polite Words
Respect for school community
In Control
Directions Followed
Encourage Others

Library Rules/Expectations
1) Always walk.
2) Keep the book carts and bookshelves neat.
3) Be respectful by using library manners and being kind.
4) During "Quiet Reading Time", please do not talk.

Students will be given a warning for expectation violations the first time. If the student chooses to continue to violate expectations/rules the student or teacher will fill out an incident form, which will provide evidence for grading and should redirect behavior. Their behavior in library class will transfer to the school wide behavior chart used in the classroom and students will "lower a clip" on the color chart in the classroom if expectations are not met in library class.

Procedures
Here is how a typical library class runs.
1) Go to your seat quietly.
2) Look at the call numbers on the spine of your books to decide which return cart they belong on after check-in.
3) After check-in, use your shelf marker to find new books.
(K may have one book checked out, grades 1-2 may have two books checked out, and grades 3-6 may have three books checked out)
- Students are asked to check out at least one AR book in their reading range
4) Once your new books are found, return to your seat for quiet reading. Students may take AR quizzes at this time.
5) Once everyone has found their books, the librarian will call names to check-out.
6) Lesson/activity

What if I forget my book on Library day?
If you forget to return your library book on Library day do not panic. I understand that sometimes things are forgotten; however, you will not be able to check out another book until your old books are returned. You will not be charged an overdue fine in the Elementary Library. Simply bring in your book on the next library class day or bring it in any day of the week.

If the book is lost or damaged beyond repair you will be responsible for paying the cost for replacing the book.

How to Find a Good Book

Think about what you like (your hobbies and interests)
Think about the kind (genre) of book you like (fiction ex. adventure, humor, mystery, fantasy; nonfiction ex. information books, how to books, biographies)
Read the back cover or the inside flap of the book jacket. You will find a short summary of what the book is about.
Open the book and look at the pages. Use the "5 finger rule" to find a "good fit book"
- 5 finger rule = If there are 5 or more words on a page that you do not understand the book may be too challenging for you.
Is the book too long, too short, or just right?
Ask someone who enjoys reading to recommend a book or author.
Look for a Caldecott or Newbery award winner.
Look at the books on the return carts.
Scan the books on display.
Search the OPAC using a keyword or subject of interest.
Ask Mrs. Miller or your classroom teacher for a recommendation.
